    Hunger and Thirst Cues

    Activity Overview

    Children will work in small groups to examine their understanding of hunger and thirst cues.

    Assessment

    The educator will observe children’s demonstrated knowledge and understanding of concepts related to hunger and thirst cues.

    Equipment

    Chart paper, Markers, Paper, 4-6 6-sided dice

    Minds On

    Working in pairs, children interview each other using the following questions for both eating and drinking. Review questions and consider displaying to ensure children’s understanding.

    • Why do you eat/drink?
    • What are your favourite foods to eat/drink?
    • What are the impacts of your food/drink choices?
    • What does it feel like when you eat/drink too much?
    • What does it feel like when you do not eat/drink enough?
    • When you eat, are you usually hungry?
    • When you drink, are you usually thirsty?
    • Why is it important to be aware of the types of foods/drinks you eat/drink? Explain your answer.
    Action

    As a large group review the concepts of physical factors, internal factors, and social factors. Consider having children provide examples and recording them on the board. Consider connecting those examples to hunger and thirst. In small groups, children respond to one of three questions below. Review the questions prior to ensure children’s understanding and have children write or illustrate their responses on chart paper. If required, consider recording children’s responses on chart paper for them.

    Question 1: Identify as many physical factors as you can that can influence your want to eat and drink. (Children’s responses may include growth spurt, level of physical activity, or stage of development.)

    Question 2: Identify as many internal hunger and thirst cues as you can. (Children’s responses may include growling stomach, dry mouth or lips, or dizziness.)

    Question 3: Identify as many social factors as you can that can influence your food and drink choices. (Children’s responses may include family, culture, religion, finances, and availability.)

    Once the children have finished recording their responses on the chart paper, hang all pages around the room and use a large-group discussion to reflect on children’s responses.

    Consolidation

    Working in small groups, provide each group with a six sided dice. Children will roll the dice and respond to the appropriate question:

    1. I know I am thirsty when …
    2. I know I am hungry when …
    3. I know I am full when …
    4. I know I am hydrated when …
    5. My favourite healthy food is …
    6. My favourite healthy drink is …

    Have children share their responses with a partner.

    Children complete a self-assessment using the Thumbs-Up Strategy (give themselves a thumbs up if they’ve “got it,” thumbs middle if they are working on it, and thumbs down if they have questions) by asking:

    1. Do I have a good understanding of the thirst and hunger cues?
    2. Am I able to apply this knowledge in my life?
